Project Moolianga: A Modern Coastal Dream

Project Moolianga: A Modern Coastal Dream

Fiona Law

In the small coastal town of Berrara, NSW, project Moolianga stands as a testament to the beauty of thoughtful renovation. This story is one of transformation, where an old home was given a new lease on life, capturing the essence of modern coastal living.

Bridget and Derek moved from Canberra to Berrara, drawn by the allure of coastal life. Initially, they had grand plans to knock down the existing structure and rebuild it as a Bali-style villa. However, as they spent time in the original home, they grew to love its charm and character.

Deciding against a complete rebuild, the couple opted instead for a renovation. The goal was to refresh and modernise the house, infuse it with a modern coastal feel, and flood it with natural light.

Having previously built a deck for them, we at Sureline Building Group were familiar with Bridget and Derek and their preferences. Living on the same street further solidified our connection. The couple wanted a home that embodied the relaxed coastal lifestyle, allowing them to enjoy the close proximity to the beach while accommodating their active lifestyle.

An outdoor shower was a must-have for rinsing off after beach visits. With their kids grown and moved out, the couple wanted a space that suited their current needs. They requested plenty of open, airy spaces that suited evenings of relaxation, but also accommodated nights spent entertaining friends.

The work was extensive. We started by knocking down the old garage in the back and constructing a two-storey structure that included a yoga studio, two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a man cave. This addition not only added space but also provided versatile areas for the couple’s leisure and hobbies.

Inside the main house, we undertook a major overhaul. We created a cosy library room, perfect for quiet reading sessions, and a sunroom that invites the outside in. The lounge room, kitchen, and master bedroom were all modernised. We also added a new laundry room and two additional bedrooms, ensuring ample space for visitors.

One of the standout features is the alfresco kitchen area, which blends indoor and outdoor living – perfect for entertaining and enjoying the coastal lifestyle. The entire home was designed to be airy, open and filled with sunlight, with large windows and open spaces that make the most of natural light.

Completing this renovation before Christmas was a priority for the couple, and we pushed hard to meet this deadline. Throughout most of the renovation, Bridget and Derek lived in the home, only moving out in the last month to allow for final touches and completion. This required careful planning and coordination to ensure minimal disruption to their daily lives.

Our team worked closely with the couple, offering ideas and suggestions to enhance the design and functionality of their home. This collaborative approach ensured that every detail was tailored to suit their preferences and needs.

Project Moolianga home is a perfect blend of coastal charm and modern design. The new two-storey garage addition with a yoga studio, man cave, and guest rooms adds significant value and versatility to the property. The home captures the coastal lifestyle that Bridget and Derek sought, providing a beautiful, functional and inviting space.

At Sureline Building Group, we are proud to have been part of this journey, turning their vision into reality. Project Moolianga is more than just a renovation; it’s a transformation that reflects the couple’s journey and their love for their coastal home.
